I am very happy the Twins re-signed Joe Mauer. I think the Pohlads have really picked up on the whole, 'you need to spend money to make money' thing. But I do think Mauer needs to relax. He is worth $23 a year. People are going to want to know what is going on in his life; they want to see a return on investment.
While I can appreciate privacy, Mauer is a hot topic and that privacy isn't going to always be achieved. He is lucky that he is as relatively boring as he is anyway - he never reveals anything about himself to the press so he can't be surprised when something like this gets out that people go crazy. Its the law of... craziness.
Mauer is the face of the franchise and needs to accept the unfortunate fact that there will be people with unrealistically high expectation about his average, games played, position played, and public relations. It is just the way it is; we have a right to expect a lot from Mauer for $23 million per year. And Mauer needs to accept that some of our expectations will be unreasonable and all come with the gig.
